Advances in Nonsurgical
Gum Treatment

About 65% of the adult population in this country suffers from some form of periodontal disease. There is a new treatment of which most patients and dentists are only just becoming aware.

Bacteria is the main cause of gum disease. These bacteria give off poisons that inflame the tissue around the teeth. As a result, spaces develop below the gums due to bone loss.

Traditionally periodontal disease has been treated by extensive gum surgery. Through new methods of advanced treatment, we are now able to avoid surgery in most cases by destroying the bacteria. This is a two part process. The first part is performed in the dental office and the second part is performed at home by the patient. In the office, the teeth are cleansed and scaled from the crown of the tooth down to the roots, and into the spaces under the gums. Once all of the toxins are removed and the "barnacles" are smoothed off of the roots, an antibacterial solution is applied. Antibiotics may also be prescribed for several days when necessary.

At home, the patient applies solutions such as ClOSysII or Peridex, baking soda/hydrogen peroxide and fluoride gel to irrigate the gums. These solutions prevent the growth of bacteria in the mouth. Ask your dentist which is best in your particular situation.

While the advances in non-surgical gum treatment are 90% effective in eliminating surgery, approximately 10% of cases will still require a modified surgical procedure. This is usually necessary in such areas as the space between the roots of the teeth where it is difficult to eliminate the bacteria. Following any periodontal surgery, patients return to the non-surgical treatment to maintain oral health. The success of this method depends on the willingness of the patient to maintain a routine home care program.
