WISDOM TEETH AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

Why are 3rd molars called wisdom teeth? Because they usually come in (if they do) at age 18 or 20, the age of adulthood or wisdom. Did you know that the human jaw is relatively smaller compared to our distant ancestors, effectively squeezing the wisdom teeth back into the jaw, causing more dental impactions?

One thing I've noticed in 27 years in dentistry, "There are no old people with wisdom teeth." Why is this? Most 3rd molars get cavities or gum disease because they are hard to reach and clean. Those that fail to erupt fully develop cysts or get serious infections when bacteria invade the tooth's growth sack.

Most people have a healthier mouth long term if the wisdom teeth are removed early. About age 16 - 18 is ideal, before the bone becomes dense around the tooth. Also, periodontal disease is much less progressive in people who have had those difficult to clean teeth removed. It's a wise move and truly preventive dentistry. We suggest that wisdom teeth (third molars) be removed before they cause these problems.

For those who require it, there are varying degrees of conscious sedation, sleep dentistry, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and pharmacotherapy available to make your wisdom tooth story a pleasant one.
